As the epic showdown of titans – Batman vs. Superman – is looming around the corner, have you thought about what will happen when the star players in your team start turning against each other? Maybe you have had the (unfortunate) opportunity to witness these battles before in the office, either a typical long-email-war-CCed-to-the-world or an actual face-off, and other employees would just stay away so they can avoid being “collateral damage”.
On the surface, we think that these office clashes happen due to disagreements, but in fact, it’s usually a reflection of values mismatch.
Let me give you an example. Judy and Margaret are co-project managers. While Judy is a financial wizard, Margaret is the marketing phoenix. They ended up fighting over an expensive marketing campaign though everybody thought that they were having a disagreement over how the money should be utilised; the truth is, Judy values security while Margaret is a risk-taker, and both of them didn’t know that. (sounds familiar?)
Now, you can say it would be easy to fix if they understand where the other party is coming from. However, just like all office-battles, the individuals either go into an offensive/defensive mode, second-guessing every move or rallying support against each other.
Maya Angelou once said that “people will judge you by your actions, not your intentions”.
Which is why in our team development programmes (more commonly called team building), our values elicitation module is a hot-seller.
In a nutshell, each participant will go through a stack of 50+ cards, each with words like money, efficiency, networking, personal development and more. They are supposed to select and rank their top 15 values, and share them on a wall. That way, every team member will know what motivates each of them, and why they do or say certain things at the workplace.
Yup, Maya, we’re letting people know our intentions, so then they can understand our actions!
Anyway, if you’re keen to explore how our team development solutions can help your organisation (and avoid an epic battle between superheroes), drop us message. One of our consultants will be in touch with you to discuss further.
Catch you at the movies. Oh, and not that I’m an alien-hater, but I’m kinda rooting for Batman. 🙂
